Earth Day: USA

EARTHDAY.ORG – Virginia

EARTHDAY.ORG™ - Virginia will leverage the power from Earth Day 2021 to drive a sustainability action wave across Virginia. As the global coordinator of Earth Day, EARTHDAY.ORG works hard to make sure that Earth Day 2021 is the most diverse digital global mobilization in defense of the environment in world history.

EARTHDAY.ORG asks the Commonwealth of Virginia to come together to combat climate change and restore, conserve and protect our environment. Communities across Virginia face devastating impacts from fracking, sea level rise, climate change, biodiversity loss and other environmental challenges. Now is the time to build a more diverse, inclusive environmental movement and accelerate the green economy!

Our Local Focus: Community Greening Efforts in Virginia

From the mountains to the coast, Virginia is a leader in the environmental movement. In Charlottesville, the University of Virginia unveiled its sustainability plan on Earth Day 2016; Richmond launched RVA Green 2050 to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050; and Virginia Beach released its Comprehensive Sea Level Rise and Recurrent Flooding Response Plan.

We must support the VA Coastal Protection Act and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). RGGI is a market-based program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, composed of individual carbon dioxide budget trading programs in nine states. The Virginia Air Pollution Control Board (APCB) has approved new rules to reduce and cap carbon emissions from large power plants, an important step for the state to participate in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

On a local scale, restaurants and farms have committed to fresh produce, and communities have hosted environmental based festivals and races. EARTHDAY.ORG - Virginia is seeking to partner with key stakeholders in the region, including elected officials; businesses; university leaders and student organizations; k-12 schoolteachers; non-governmental organizations; and environmental justice and faith groups.

During 2021, we want to bring all Virginia communities together to call for climate action now in order to address one of the greatest threats to the environment and public health. Join the community and join the movement.
