Scientists estimate that one out of every three bites of food we eat exists because of animal pollinators like bees, butterflies and moths, birds and bats, and beetles and other insects. On a global scale, the contribution of bees and other insects to global food production is valued at $190 billion a year. In the United States, however, pollinator populations are struggling.

Pollinators face many challenges like habitat loss, disease, parasites and pesticides. All of these factors have contributed to the decline of many species of pollinators.

This past June, during National Pollinator Week, U.S. Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Jim McGovern (D-MA) reintroduced the Saving America’s Pollinators Act in the 117th Congress to protect bees and other vital pollinators. 

This bill establishes a pollinator protection board to monitor the status of native pollinator populations and suspends the use of neonicotinoids and other pesticides harmful to pollinators.

Pollinators are a keystone species. They keep our food system and entire ecosystems intact. Without them, the world would be a different place.
