St. Kitts and Nevis Are Planting A Great Earth Day Celebration

Down in the Caribbean, St. Kitts and Nevis are making a bold move and are committing to plant a tree for each of its citizens this Earth Day. A nation of 55,000 people, they are taking Earth Day Network’s Trees for the Earth goal head on and will plant 55,000 trees over the next five years. Keep in mind that the two-island state is only 100 square Miles. That’s almost 500 trees per square mile!
Planting 55,000 trees is an impressive feat, and we applaud their valiant efforts. Imagine a world where every country takes St. Kitts and Nevis’s example, and plants one tree for every one of their citizens – we are.

Trees help fight global warming by absorbing C02 from our atmosphere, making them a vital component of climate change mitigation strategies. They purify the air we breathe as their leaves and bark filter out particulates and absorb pollutant gases. They also support communities and improve their quality of life, especially children, who suffer from respiratory problems like asthma.
St. Kitts and Nevis are making an investment in their future, as trees also help achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability for their communities. Their ambitious tree planting will be fruitful for decades to come.
